Today was our first day of class, we met for Exploring the Olympics through Literature and Music at 1pm, to find out that Laura and I are the only two people taking it. Our professors are really nice, we have one for english and one for music. The first half is Literature and the second half is Music. We were given a stack of reading for the Lit portion that is an inch thick. I'm actually really glad to get it because reading it will give me something to do. I think we are trying to go to the movie tonight because we need some entertainment. Mom is supposed to be calling in about 15 minutes and I don't really have anything else to add, so I will write more later. ~Rachel

Tonight we went to see Mr. & Mrs. Smith at the rooftop theatre in Plaka, it was really really good. The reviews I read said it was horrible but I loved it. The theatre was really cool, you could see the Acropolis and it was all lit up after dark and was so pretty. We're going to try and go back one night to walk around to see all of it. Tomorrow we're going to register at the US Embassy so that they know we're here in case anything happens. We have class at 1 and then we're going to take the metro to the big grocery store at 3. Wednesday night, Placido Domingo is in concert at the Theatre of Herodes Atticus at the Acropolis and a couple of us are going to try and get tickets-it would be so amazing to see him perform there-or even perform at all. We figured that if we can't get tickets we'll just stand outside and listen from there. It's midnight here and we have to get up early so I will finish for now, but there will be more tomorrow. ~Rachel

I'M GOING TO SEE PLACIDO DOMINGO IN CONCERT TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE ACROPOLIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Today has been incredibly exhausting. We had to get up "early" this morning to go register at the American Embassy. Sarah and left early to buy fruit for breakfast at the local market and then we met Dina at school at 10 and walked up to Syntagma Square to take the Metro which was pretty cool, but basically your standard subway system, just in Greek. It took about 5 minutes to register at the Embassy which hardly seemed worth the walk and the 1.40E it cost to get there when you can do the entire process online. But it was still kind of cool to be back on US soil for that short amount of time. We got done at about 11 so I went with Dina to pay my housing fee and then walked back to the apartment and took a short nap. I walked up to the post office at about 12:40 with Sarah and we bought stamps and mailed our postcards before I had to be back at school for class. My Olympics through Literature class consists of our professor lecturing from her desk about 2 feet in front of me and Laura while we take copious notes about Greek history. The information is actually really interesting, its making me think about changing my major to History/English with a concentration on the classical period, but then again, pretty much everything I study makes me want to change my major. I still really want to come here for grad school, UINDY's program is comparative lit so I could focus on Greek and English literature at the same time. She let us out of class early and I came back to the apartment and slept until about quarter of 4. We were supposed to meet Dina again at 4:30 to go to the grocery store but Laura and I walked over early and went to the computer lab. It ended up being 5:20 before we left so we spent about half an hour talking to some of the people from the other group who were in the lab. The walk to the grocery store took about 15 minutes and was uphill all the way. There were police carrying machine guns everywhere so there must have been something important happening around Syntagma because they were there yesterday too. We shopped for about half an hour, I bought cherry cheesecake type yogurt stuff, bread, cheese, pouches of pasta meals, and weird laundry detergent tablets that have directions in French-not Greek or English-so we don't exactly know how to use them. We came back to the apartment and dropped off our groceries and then Laura, Stephanie, and I walked up to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus at the Acropolis and bought our tickets for tomorrow night's concert, they were only 35E with our 50% student discount. I'll finish up later, Sarah's having difficulty operating the washing machine. ~Rachel

the slow fade to the ocean's arms

This has been an incredibly exhausting week. Yesterday was really good though. We had Lit class at 1 and met the third member of our class, we discussed the history of Greece some more and then the prof. let us leave a few minutes early. Laura and I decided to go shopping and looked up the sandal man's address and headed over to Ermou street for the afternoon. The Melissinos shop is about a 10 minute walk from the apartment and it was really easy to find, but it's on a little side street kind of hidden away from foot traffic. There were at least a thousand pairs of shoes hanging on the walls of the shop and tons of leather straps and strings; it was amazing. Laura got some lace up sandals called the Laconian and I got a pair of flip flop styled sandals called the Minoan and a pair of lace up sandals called the Mycenean which had to be customed made that afternoon and picked up later that evening. After we bought our sandals we headed back down Ermou street to find Laura an outfit to wear to the concert that night. We spent about 45 minutes in Zara trying on various things and I ended up buying a beach cover up since I didn't pack one, while she got nothing. She found a tank top at another store we went in and then we stopped at the Hondas Center, a 5 level multi purpose store that has high end cosmetics and perfume on one level, regular hair and bath products on another, and music/movies on another; we picked up some supplies that we had forgotten to pack and then walked back to the Melissinos shop to pick up my Mycenean's. We had to wait about half an hour while he finished working on them, but it was neat because we got to watch him make my shoes! We ate dinner at Everest, a fast sandwich shop and then walked back to the apartment to get ready for the concert. I wore my big hot pink MaxMara circle skirt, a black sequined t-shirt and black heels, and everyone else dressed up too even though there wasn't really a dress code. We walked over to the theatre at 7 and spent about 40 minutes waiting in line to enter, thankfully we had gotten there early and got good seats in the center. The theater was amazing, it was built in 161 AD by Roman consul Herodes Atticus and was restored in the 50s for use as a concert hall; the concert last night was part of the 50th anniversary celibration. Domingo was accompanied by the Thessolonika Orchestra and a female opera star whose name we didn't get because they were annoucing everything in Greek and it wasn't in the program. The whole performance was incredible, definately the opportunity of a lifetime. Most of the songs they performed were from Spanish operas but in the middle of the set they performed three songs in English, Domingo performed Some Enchanted Evening by himself. My favorite part was when the woman sang "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady-it is one of my all time favorite songs. They performed the famous duet from West Side Story and then went back to traditional opera. Towards the end of the concert, when Placido was doing a solo performance, he invited one of his friends, a young tenor who was in the audience, to join him onstage and sing a duet. It was really cool because the guy was really young-in his twenties-but he had an incredible voice. Unfortunately he didn't perform my favorite song of his, Nessun Dorma, but it was still worth hearing him. After the concert we walked up to Syntagma Square and had a midnight snack at McDonalds-I had a cheeseburger happy meal-their food actually tastes better here, I can't stand it in America but the french fries here are incredibly good. I finally got to bed about 2am and slept until 11 this morning. Today we didn't have English class, we had to visit a museum instead. We waited for Sarah to get out of her psychology class and then walked up past the Parliament building in Syntagma on the Vassilisis Sofias trying to find the Museum of Cycladic Art. We didn't have very good directions as to where the museum was located and ended up walking right past it and about 10 minutes out of the way. It was about 90 degrees today so the walking uphill was exhauting. By the time we found the museum I was ready for a siesta. It was a really interesting museum to tour; their collection covers the art of the Cyclades and dates from the 3rd century BC. I loved looking at all of the ceramics and vases and the Cycladic figurines were incredible; I took tons of pictures-they'll be on webshots shortly. We only spent about an hour and a half walking around-not nearly enough time to fully see everything, so I will probably end up going back another day to get a really good perception. We walked down to the Benaki Museum after we finished at the Cycladic and spent another hour and a half touring that collection which dates from the Neolithic era to the 20th Century. I didn't like it as well as the Cycladic, their collection seemed somewhat randomly pieced together and many pieces were on loan to other museums so they had photo-copies displayed instead. My Lit professor here discovered one of the pieces displayed in the older collection-an axe head, so we searched that piece out when we arrived. They had several gold wreaths of leaves on display that were really impressive, I want to find a store that sells them because they are gorgeous-I know I can't get a real one, but a fake would be cool. Their collection of costumes from the 19th century was incredible, it was really interesting to look through-the detail and the levels of preservation are amazing. There were several pieces I wanted pictures of but they don't allow cameras-which may be part of the reason I disliked that museum to be honest. Since we were incredibly exhausted from walking and disappointed in the collection, we walked through each floor and then decided to head back towards the apartment. Laura wanted to stop back at Ermou and pick up the pair of shoes she saw yesterday so Sarah and I walked down to the cheap scarf shop I found yesterday. Everything in the store was 5E and I found a gorgeous sunset orange wrap with fringe on the ends and threads of gold shot through it. Sarah hadn't been down Ermou before so we walked through the Hondas Center and I picked up some mousse for my hair since it has become somewhat unruly. There was a really neat store across the street that we went in and found beach bags-yet another thing I didn't pack with me, so we now have the same bag in different colors. We got back about an hour ago and I am still completely worn out, I'm going to have my leftover sandwich for dinner and then try and work on homework. I have an eight page research paper on the Olympics through ancient Greek literature due on Tuesday, a one page reaction to the Benaki Museum due Tuesday, and a five page reaction to the Cycladic, Benaki, and National Archeological Museums due on Thursday, so I will have plenty to keep me busy tonight and this weekend. I'll write more later, the Domingo pictures are up on webshots so check them out! ~Rachel

Rhinestone

Today has been a somewhat lazy day. We were supposed to get up and go to an island with the other group but our alarm didn't go off and they didn't seem to think they should wake us up even though they knew we were planning on coming. Sara and I woke up right as they were walking out the door and were told that they were already running late so they weren't going to wait on us. We went back to bed and slept until noon when we got up and decided to take the metro to Dafni to the grocery store to buy food for this week. We like the metro much better than the Tram which should be considered a form of cruel and unusual punishment. We slept in yesterday and took the Tram to the beach with the other group of students; it took about an hour to get there, most of the time was spent standing but rather uneventful. The beach was really fun, we got off at a less crowded stop and spread out on the only area we could find that wasn't full of huge rocks. The water was amazing, you could swim out really far and there were no rolling waves like on the Atlantic coast. We would swim for about 20 minutes and then lay out for another half hour and repeated that cycle for about 3 hours. We left around 5:45 and took the most torturous ride public transportation has ever seen. The tram was really crowded so all twenty of us ended up standing, and more and more people kept getting on at every stop. A group of high school aged guys got on and proceeded to harrass three of the girls from our group for the remaining 30 minute ride in several different languages and gestures. Their minimal knowledge of english seemed to include every crude phrase and curse word ever invented and they seemed quite proud of that fact; some of the stuff they said was so absurd it was almost funny-it would have been if it weren't directed at actual people. When we finally got into the city the girls and their boyfriends were quite angry and it was pretty much decided that the Tram will not be our favored mode of transportation while we are here. We got home about 7:15 and spent about two hours getting cleaned up and eating dinner before we headed over to the other girls's apartment for the "party" they had planned. The party ended up being about 15 of us sitting in their very cramped and hot living room watching Forest Gump on dvd. We all left early because the island trip was scheduled to leave at 6:45 this morning, but all in all it was a fun evening.
After we went to the store this morning, Sara and I came back and ate a quick lunch-I had part of a Dairy Milk bar and some Ruffles potato chips and a cup of juice. I finally finished The Jane Austen Book Club and Sara napped; we got up around 4 and walked into Monastiraki to the Ceramics store we found last week so that Sara could buy two more vases for her relatives. I found even more stuff I want to buy and have decided to start eating at home all the time to save money for souveniers. Cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and pasta for dinner. I got a weeks worth of groceries for about 25E; it's so much cheaper than eating out and its easier than having to go out everytime you're hungry. We stayed out for about an hour and ended up walking by the Agora on the way back. I stopped in Starbucks and bought another Mango Citrus frappucino-my only splurge for the weekend. We found the coolest mugs on display in the window, they are part of the Starbucks City Mugs collection and have either Athens or Greece painted on them along with grecian figures. I know I'm definately going to buy at least one if not both of them before I leave and Sara bought the espresso sized versions for her sister because she's a Starbucks addict. We made dinner about an hour ago; we had beef hardshell tacos w/parmesan cheese-an unlikely flavor combination that was really good-green beans, and chocolate chip cookie bars that I made from a Betty Crocker mix we found at the store today. I think next week I'm going to try the blueberry muffins because I've been craving them for two days. We found two different channels showing American tv shows and movies and watched Seinfeld and the Nanny while we cooked. Unfortunately the selection of movies is horrible-they're showing Rhinestone starring Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton-so we are watching a history channel special on Newton's theology. It is quite possibly the weirdest thing I have ever seen because they have this weird actor portraying Newton depicting scenes from his life while other costumed actors narrate the information. I've decided to spend the rest of the night working on my research paper because it is due on Tuesday and we have plans for the next two days. We were going to spend tomorrow at the National Archeological Museum for our Odyssey class and then go to the paid beach on Monday because we're out of class for a Greek holiday, but we found out it is supposed to storm on Monday and now we have to rearrange our plans. Our flatmates still aren't back from their island trip-they've been gone for over 13 hours-so we'll probably wait to discuss the situation with them before finalizing our plans. I'll write more later. ~Rachel

right here waiting

Right Here~Staind
I know Ive been mistaken
But just give me a break
And see the changes that I've made
I've got some imperfections
But how can you collect them all
And throw them in my face

But you always find a way
To keep me right here waiting
You always find the words to say
To keep me right here waiting
If you chose to walk away
I'd still be right here waiting
Searching for the things to say
To keep you right here waiting

I hope you're not intending
To be so condescending
It's as much as I can take
And you're so independent
You just refuse to bend
So I keep bending till I break

But you always find a way
To keep me right here waiting
You always find the words to say
To keep me right here waiting
If you chose to walk away
I'd still be right here waiting
Searching for the things to say
To keep you right here waiting

I've made a commitment
I'm willing to bleed for you
I needed fulfillment
I found what I need in you
Can't you just forgive me
I don't want to relive all the mistakes
I've made along the way

But I always find a way
To keep you right here waiting
I always find the words to say
To keep you right here waiting

But you always find a way
To keep me right here waiting
We always find the words to say
To keep me right here waiting
If I chose to walk away
Would you be right here waiting
Searching for the things to say
To keep me right here waiting
