a foodie weekend

It was my first Saturday farmer's market of the season, and it was miserable. There were just too many people, parking was ridiculous, and the only two things on my list were nowhere to be found.
I did however, walk away with a bag full of other delicious produce, just not the rhubarb or peonies I'd hoped to find. And I'm always just a bit amazed at just how far $11 can go compared to how little it would buy at Whole Foods.
I spent the rest of Saturday in the kitchen, making broccoli slaw, potato-squash torte, and planning a pickled beet experiment. Its the best way to usher in the heat of the season, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to a summer of fresh local food, and dreaming up a culminating cookbook of the results.
I've been obsessing over my first batch of Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day, eating pretty much nothing else since pulling the first loaf out of the oven last Tuesday. I found the details here, as I don't have room in the budget for the book yet. I subbed in whole wheat flour for 1/3 of the all purpose, and it tastes delicious. I'm definitely sold on the process; it will save so much time only having to mix up the dough once every two weeks, and the smaller sized loaves means I have fresher bread on a regular basis. And its the perfect pairing for the organic strawberry freezer jam I made a few weeks ago.
